Itinerary

Leave the Tajik capital behind and head for Kalaikhum, stopping at the 11th-century Hulbuk Palace on the way. Beyond the Shurobod Pass the road plunges into spectacular valleys as the true Pamirs begin. In Kalaikhum you'll meet the Panj River — your companion for the next few days — with your first glimpse of Afghanistan across the water.

This is a high-altitude, multi-day overland adventure with long driving days, two challenging treks (up to 4,400 m and 4,800 m) and a remote overnight in a village reachable only on foot. It suits travelers who are reasonably fit and comfortable with basic facilities in very remote conditions. Minimum age is 16.
